Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV)

Highly stable virus causing mottled leaves on tomatoes. Spread by contact, not insects. Survives on tools and in soil.

Identification

Light and dark green mottling pattern on leaves. Leaves may be distorted or fern-like. Stunted plants. Internal browning of fruit.

Damage & Symptoms

Mottled, distorted leaves. Stunted growth. Reduced fruit set. Internal fruit browning. Yield reduction 20-70%.

Organic Control

No cure. Remove infected plants. Disinfect hands and tools with milk or TSP (trisodium phosphate).

Chemical Control

No effective treatment. Resistant varieties are the only control.

Prevention

Resistant varieties (Tm-2 gene). Do not smoke near plants (tobacco mosaic related). Wash hands before handling. Disinfect tools. Milk dip for hands.
