Root-Knot Nematodes
nematodeMeloidogyne spp.
Microscopic roundworms that infect roots causing galls. Widespread in warm soils.
Identification
Cannot see organism. Identify by root galls (swollen knots on roots). Stunted growth despite adequate water/nutrients.
Damage & Symptoms
Root galls, stunted growth, yellowing, wilting in heat. Reduced yield. Secondary root rot infections.
Organic Control
Solarize soil (cover with clear plastic 4-6 weeks in summer). Plant nematode-resistant varieties (VFN tomatoes). Incorporate chitin-rich amendments.
Chemical Control
Very limited options. Fumigation for commercial use only. No effective home garden chemical control.
Prevention
Crop rotation with non-host crops (corn, grains). Resistant varieties. Marigold cover crop (Tagetes). Add organic matter to encourage nematode-trapping fungi.
